Racing Birthday Party.

January 6th, 2010

You might have read here the other day about the big surprise race car experience we arranged for my husband for his birthday.  It was a “big” birthday, so I also planned a surprise party for him this year.  I incorporated the race theme because he was still very into his racing day memories.  In addition to going on ebay and finding plastic cups with race cars on them and checkered tablecloths, I came up with ways to use his photos from the race track that day.  I love to find ways to use my photos besides just in the ole scrapbooks.

Here’s what I used for the table centerpieces

(the checkered ribbon is from American Crafts)

I have to say here that I got the racing flags from a shop on ebay and I loved the shop but the flags were actually from Oriental Trading Co according to the packages, and they were pieces of CRAP.  Straight out of the package the second I touched the flags (not kidding here), the plastic flag just fell right off the stick.  Every.  Single.  One.  What?!?  Try taking 24 flags and gluing them back onto sticks and leaving them lying around to dry while you’re at home with your husband and don’t want him to SEE them since they’re for his SURPRISE party!  ha ha

Here’s the napkin holder my aunt (who helped me decorate) made on the spur of the moment with an extra photo.  She drew those flags herself.  Isn’t this cute?

I took along Ken’s photo album that I made him just in case there was a party guest who hadn’t heard his racing story before.  That was a real trip, trying to get this book out the door with me without him seeing it!  ha ha

I also made a tri-fold photo display board for him at the very last minute, which means I don’t LOVE it but the hubby was happy with it so that’s what matters, right?

I used American Crafts chipboard letters to put ZOOM ~ ZOOM ~ ZOOM across the board like that car commercial that you used to see on TV all the time with the little boy.  Remember that?  ha ha

I had the cakes made with checkered flags on them and then I stuck a couple of these popsicle sticks I made into the cakes.  What I did for this was just order some extra photos of Ken driving the Indy car at the track and just cut it out and used a 3-D pop dot to attach it to the popsicle stick.  Easy peasy.  Although somehow I managed to NOT take ANY photos of the cakes at the party, I did take one of the cake we had at home for him on his actual birthday (the surprise party was a few days later to throw him off).
