Bad Steak & Shake. Bad, bad Steak & Shake.
I love to read, and I read lots of crazy crap on the internet. Some true, some not. But this story about a deaf woman being treated so badly at Steak & Shake back in January just disgusted me. I’ll put the links here for you to read her story from her blog and then the follow-up stories of what happened afterward. It’s not necessarily the fact that they don’t have accommodations for deaf people….it’s the way the employee treated the woman (whether she can hear or not!) that pisses me off.
Here’s the initial story on her blog.
Here’s what she wrote the next day on her blog.
Then apparently her story got on the ABC news and Fox news. Perhaps some of you already saw it. I don’t watch the news, so I missed it at the time.
And another blog post she wrote in response to someone who suggested that she planned the entire thing.
And yet another blog post that is her response to a person who thinks SHE owes Steak & Shake the apology.
Here’s where she tells about her meeting with the Steak & Shake executives.
In May she writes on her blog that she still has not heard about any solution from Steak & Shake. After 4 months, I think that’s pretty bad.
Here she talks about her decision to finally file a lawsuit when she realizes Steak & Shake is going to do nothing. I had a feeling the whole time I was following this story that in the end they would do nothing, and I’m sad to see that I was right.
I feel bad, because it’s something I know nothing about. I can hear, everyone I know can hear, and I have always just taken that for granted. The next time I’m at a drive-thru window, you can bet I will think about Karen and be oh so grateful.

Thanks for covering this subject! I recently wrote an email to the CEO– we’ll see if that does anything. It’s frustrating to see that other deaf and hard of hearing people are still reporting some incidents at the drive through.
